The Dos And Don'ts Of Caring For Dental Veneers

Dental veneers is a simple procedure that can help restore your smile. Depending on the number of teeth you are having done, it can be costly so it is important that you take care of them. Here are the dos and don'ts of having dental veneers.

  1. Do choose the right coloring. It might be tempting to pick a shade of veneers that is overwhelmingly bright, but they can look false. To get the most natural look, choose veneers that are as close to your natural color as possible.
  2. Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol can cause the bonding on the veneers to weaken. If you do decide to drink, try to limit your alcohol intake to twice weekly.
  3. Do brush and floss. To maintain the appearance of your veneers and the overall health of your teeth, it is important that you brush and floss.  Ideally, you should brush and floss at least twice daily to keep your veneers in good condition.
  4. Do not eat or drink foods that stain. Tea, coffee, red wine, and foods like beets can cause your veneers to stain. You can choose to avoid the foods and drinks altogether or limit your intake to only a couple of times a week.
  5. Do have your teeth regularly examined. Your veneers will need to be inspected on a regular basis to ensure they are still bonded properly. If not, the dentist can repair them. Regular visits also give the dentist a chance to polish them.
  6. Do not use abrasive toothpaste. Instead of using abrasive toothpaste, look for those that are specially made for veneers. Abrasive toothpaste can damage the veneers and lead to the new for new installs.
  7. Do use mouthguards. Mouthguards can help protect your veneers if you play sports. A hit to your mouth could result in your veneers being chipped or cracked.
  8. Do not eat hard foods. Hard foods, such as nuts, can cause the veneers to chip or crack. You should also avoid biting hard objects, such as pens and bottle tops.
  9. Do get checked for bruxism. Bruxism is a condition that causes you to grind your teeth. If you do this while sleeping, your veneers could be irreparably damaged. A quick exam by your dentist can help identify if you have this condition so you can get treatment.

Dental veneers do not require much more care than your regular teeth, but you have to be cautious once they are installed. By taking care of them, you can extend their lifespan.
